Celebrations The club held its 50th anniversary celebration last Friday evening in Pairc Mhic Eochagain. The evening began with a combined schools game with Castletown Geoghegan/Ballinagore taking on Dysart/Loughnavalley. We thank their mentors for their work with these players and Adrian & Deirdre Murphy for sponsoring the Days Bazaar Cup and medals which Deirdre presented after the game. All children present also received crisps and minerals provided by Andrew Drake and Ciaran Favier. Newly ordained, Fr Ciaran Clarke, then celebrated mass in front of a large crowd in the stand. It was a fitting tribute to our club founder, Joe Clarke, to have his son celebrate mass as the centrepiece of our celebrations. We thank all readers and those who brought up gifts, also Kathryn Nea and Diarmuid O’Brien who provided the music and singing, the altar boys, Ministers of the Eucharist and Davy Joe Fallon for the excellent sound system. It was good to have St. Josephs clubman Johhny Hanniffy part of the procession of gifts when he brought forward the Johnny Garvin Perpetual Trophy to the altar. After the mass club chairman, Frank Kiernan, welcomed all who turned up on the night. He thanked county chairman and secretary, Sean Sheridan & James Savage and their wives for accepting our invite and also the local papers for attending, especially Gerry Buckley. After introducing the St. Malachys set dancers under the guidance of Irene Dennehy, and accompanied by Davy Joe, Frank invited all for refreshments and to view all the items on display in the dressing rooms. The photos, match reports, trophies, medals and memorabilia on show brought back many happy memories and all present were enthralled by the display. Such is the demand to view the items it has been decided to leave them in place until next weekend in order to give anyone who could not make last Friday night a chance to see them. Photos of the night are up on both our website and our facebook page. Huge work went into our anniversary night and we express our gratitude to all members who provided items for display, help with parking, erected tents and brought food. Thanks to Anna O’Malley and Geraldine Cassidy who worked tirelessly in the refreshment tent, to Bernie Ward for providing light to the parking area, to Emily & Sinead Kiernan, Larry Hackett and Pat Garvin for all their work in getting the display area ready and to Ger Jackson for always being available to help over the last week. Finally well done to our committee who really came up trumps over the past fortnight in organising help for Fr Ciaran's ordination and getting our anniversary night up and running. Here’s to the next 50! Malachys Abú. 1st of October 2024. |
